On the afternoon of January 13, 1996 a young 9 year old girl and her 5 year old brother were riding their bikes in Arlington, Texas. The boy decided to head back and left his sister to ride at the nearby abandoned grocery store.

When that boy returned home without his sister their grandfather asked where his sissy was. The boy said she stayed for one more ride on the ramp. He sent the boy back to tell her to come back home. A couple minutes later he came back and said he couldn’t find her. Their grandfather began to worry, so he decided to head to where the kids where headed. By the time he arrived police were everywhere. All that was left was the bike.

Right after the boy left a truck pulled up next to the girl. A man jumped out and snatched that little girl off the street. A 78 year old man witnessed this incident and called police. It was too late, the girl was gone. Eight minutes was all it took for this to happen. Eight minutes from the time she left the house until the man called police.

Four days later a man was walking his dog and spotted a body in the nearby creek. Her throat had been cut. She had been kept alive for 2 days after the kidnapping. During that time she was sexually assaulted.

That young girl was Amber Hagerman. Her legacy lives on with the AMBER Alert System. Rest in Peace Amber. Your life was stolen from you way too soon. You didn’t deserved anything that happened to you. I never knew you, but I’ll never forget you or your story.

I recount this story for only one reason. This story and thousands like it are just some of the reasons that I will never worship a god. Not any god that has ever been described or mentioned throughout human history. “What does worshiping a god have to do with this story?” you might be asking right now. It’s really simple. If he existed, he could have prevented this from happening and didn’t.

As soon as someone finds out that I’m an atheist they inevitably ask me, “Why don’t you believe in god?”. Here’s the thing though. It doesn’t matter if I believe in a god or not. It doesn’t even matter if there is a god or not.

Let’s, for the sake of argument, assume there is a god. He is the god of the christian bible. This all powerful creator sees and knows all. It sat idly by and not only let this happen, but watched it unfold. This is a cruel and sadistic being. It is not worthy of my love and adoration. It deserves disdain. It deserves to be dealt with and punished for having the power to stop an atrocity, yet doing absolutely nothing.

Tracie Harris provided a great insight when she said, “You either have a god who sends child rapists to rape children or you have a god who simply watches it and says, ‘When you’re done, I’m going to punish you.’ If I could stop a person from raping a child, I would. That’s the difference between me and your god.”

If the story about Amber or any of the thousands of girls and boys around the world that his happens to doesn’t fill you with rage, then you are a cold and heartless person. It should also force you to ask why it happens. If you believe in a god, it should force you to ask why he LET it happen. Why he didn’t stop it. Why he didn’t prevent it in the first place. He has the power but chose not to use it.

What makes me angrier is the loophole that has been built into your religion. No one has ever found Amber’s killer. They may never find him. With over 80% of Americans proclaiming themselves christian it’s safe to assume that this individual was also a believer. In the last 18 years since this incident he could have recommitted himself to his faith. He could have asked for forgiveness. According to your own scripture he would have gotten it. 1 John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” So basically all this person has to do is ask, truly ask, for forgiveness and he will be forgiven. All I can picture about this situation is poor Amber being stuck in eternity with the person that raped her for two days and then slit her throat. What kind of heaven is that?

So there you go. You keep on believing in this god that lets your favorite sports team win the big game. That helped you graduate from a turnstile high school. That gave you that minimum wage job you wanted so badly. Just continue ignoring all those little innocent children that are raped and murdered every single day while the god you believe in gives you an extra scoop of ice cream for free. It doesn’t matter if he is real or not, he’s a fucking asshole either way.
