New to Me! Music from 2013

“Music is what feelings sound like.” No truer words have ever been spoken. I’m not sure who said it, but that quote sure hits the nail on the head. If music doesn’t move you or make you want to move then you’re not using it right. Music is a huge part of my life. I still get excited about finding a new artist. Which is my whole point in doing this. Discovering new artists. Well, new to me anyway.

In the past I have used a similar method for music discovery. I have come across some groups and artists that ended up being some of my favorites. Past discoveries include Atmosphere, Cancer Bats, Cloud Nothings, Doomtree, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Hopsin, Imperial Teen, Japandroids, Jay Reatard, Lower Dens, The Men, No Age, Okkervil River, Death Grips, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Ra Ra Riot, Raccoo-oo-oon, Russian Circles, Tame Impala, Toro Y Moi, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Wavves and The War on Drugs. All of these were chosen by a few simple rules:

Must not have heard any music from artist before

Artist must have had new album out in the last calendar year

Only download one album per artist

Choose 100 different artists

Pick based on name and/or album cover alone

My decisions came down to the genres I was interested in, if the name piqued my curiosity and sometimes if they had a creative or attention grabbing album cover. I started my journey by looking at Wikipedia. They have a great starting list of albums released by year. Next, using my trusty Google-Fu, I took a look across the internet at end of the year lists. Finally I asked my friends. For the year of 2013, this is the list of 100 artists that I have compiled. Other than name, genre and, for some, the album art, I know nothing about these groups.

I plan on downloading these at random. I’ll try to not only post my impressions about the album, but also update this page with links to those opinions. I won’t really be rating them, just expressing how I felt about them. If you know of these artists I’d love to hear comments. Who sucks? Who Rocks? Which are instant classics? Who has potential? Which are disappointing? Share your thoughts in the comments.

UPDATE 7/1/14: I’ve been slow to update. I had a musical crisis. When updating my iPod everything was erased from it. I’ve been slowly putting stuff back on it, but it’s a long process going through 20,000+ songs. I’ll see about going through these a little quicker and add them alphabetically from now on. At least I’ll try.
